First
Floor:
390 sq.ft. Garages
= 838 sq. ft. Though the house has electric baseboard heating throughout,
the air tight wood heater on the garage level with metal chimney heats the
whole house comfortably. Cut, split and dried wood is delivered by pick-up
truck to the back of the garage where it is easily accessible to load into
the wood heater. A 'casa blanca' type ceiling fan at the top of the stairwell
circulates the rising hot air back down into the house. Notice the spaces
at the sides of the garages for storage shelves and work bench. The entrance
has plenty of closet space plus a guest toilet.
Second
Floor:
1348 sq.ft. The open plan provides panoramic views and a dining
space large enough for a banquet. The sewing room could double as a 4th bedroom
if necessary. The back door leads from the utility room to the back garden.
Third
Floor:
1348 sq.ft. The study can be a 3rd bedroom, so the bathroom
for bedroom #2 is also accessible from the linen and food lift room. The ensuite
bathroom for bedroom #1 has a soaker tub plus a shower stall. The large landing
outside the study serves as a spot to do the ironing. The 4 ft. opening into
the study has two 2ft. doors under arches that open into recessed spaces.
Fourth
Floor: 588 sq.ft. Deck = 700 sq.ft. This sunny room with fabulous views and
roof deck access is large enough for doubles table tennis. Notice the food
elevator location and clean-up sink. One can look over the handrail to the
wood heater 3 floors below. Doors onto the deck are slightly recessed and
open outwards to ensure waterproofing.
Living
space = 3614 sq. ft.
Sun
Room House: The primary focus of the Sun Room House was to provide a large
family room on the 4th floor with access to the roof deck. The house was designed
for a sloping lot with views across a valley towards snow capped mountains
and a glacier. Because the house has 4 stories a food elevator was provided
primarily to take food on a trolley from the kitchen level to the sun room,
and of course groceries from the 1st garage level to the kitchen level. The
white walls running front to back appear to be one foot thick - makes the
house look substantial and solid. The square openings in the walls on the
entrance porch and roof deck trellis are one foot thick. The front windows
protrude by 6 inches to provide depth shading.

Designer's
Comments: The 4th floor sun room has easy access to food and drinks from the
kitchen via the food elevator. The ample drive provides visitor parking. The
walk-out back garden is fenced with an amphitheatre type slope providing a
flat area immediately outside the back door.
