CUBE
HOUSE: Designed for no-view city living with privacy and security the primary
considerations. The enclosed (walled) patio on the 2nd floor provides more
privacy than would a simple deck rail. Openings can be screened for additional
privacy. Sleeping outside under the stars during summer months is a viable
prospect. The simplicity of construction is obvious, and the round turret
and rounded wall sections could be squared to reduce costs - and the patio
openings could be circles instead of the 8' squares shown.
FIRST
FLOOR: The spacious entrance serves as a utility room with the under counter
washer and drier placed in a closet opposite the door from the garage. The
study/computer room/office has a glass wall looking into the open air court
yard. Glass doors lead from this space into the garage and bedroom #3. If
building byelaws permitted double drive access to the street, then a second
garage could be placed where bedroom #2 is and the bedroom could be placed
opposite bedroom #3 in the present garage space.
SECOND
FLOOR: The 10 ft. high 2nd floor ceiling makes this open plan expansive. The
kitchen walls are a mere 6 ft. high (fridge height) so the round turretted
windows above the kitchen and stairs are visible from everywhere in the living
space. The enclosed patio appears to double the living space. A window frame
glazed with mirrors on the stairwell wall opposite the kitchen expandes the
kitchen visually - see the drawing with the roof off below right.
DESIGNER'S
COMMENTS: This simple design provides secluded and secure living spaces in
a built up urban location. Affordable construction and minimum maintenance
are attractive assets.
